A recent isue in local law enforcement has been licence plate covers. Usually clear or tinted plastic, sometimes nearly opaque, they are illegal in Maryland, DC, Virginia, and other areas, and in DC the fines go as high as $500. why? They block police and cameras from accurately recording your licence plate. Still, it's easy to find sites that market them with the intent of allowing you to break the law.

Busted! This WTOP article indicates that local police departments are failing to obey this law themselves, with police cars and the personal cars of many officers having such plate covers. But do the police departments fine themselves and their officers? Nope! They do say they will remove the covers and talk to the officers about the covers.

Says D.C. Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Kevin Morison (from the article): "We're also getting the word out to our officers that on their personal vehicles that they need to be following the law," Morison said. "It's unacceptable. We ought to be setting the standard and leading by example."

Now if we can just get them to stop speeding, tailgating, and weaving too...
