coincidences abound!

I feel like I've been submerged in a sea of coincidence recently. Two interesting cases:

1) a few years ago, bought a European-style board game called Carcassonne, but didn't open it until about a week ago, when [livejournal.com profile] blueeowyn and I wanted to play a game while watching the Olympics. Other than the game, I'd never heard of Carcassonne before. Couple of days later I'm reading a story in Fantasy and Science Fiction and the setting is (you guessed it!) Carcassonne!

2) A big topic at work these days is "Design of Experiments." Only yesterday did I and a coworker read about the foundings of the topic: the "founder" was Ronald Fisher, who allegedly developed the topic out of an afternoon tea party when a lady claimed adding tea to milk tasted different than adding milk to tea. I frequently wade through the math section at Borders, seeing if anything catches my eye. A book I'd never seen before graced the shelf: The Lady Tasting Tea by David Salsburg. It caught my eye not because of the topic at work, but because I figured it to be a misplaced fiction novel. Nope! Price tag said "math" so I opened it up, and sure enough, it's about the history of modern statistics, including the Ronald Fisher story.
