And given the number of companies whose niche market is recovering most of the data from a truly trashed drive (ENGR sent one away that had become rather 'unhappy' when a ceiling tile got soaked and crashed onto the drive while the drive was on), the safety of the drive unless you really kill it is very suspect.

I like the idea of the autoclav method. I may see if we can get that for here for when we send computers to surplus property.
