Browser questions

Got a question about Internet Explorer.

Most of the time, I'll have multiple windows open so I can read L.J. while my e-mail loads, etc. Maybe I'm in the middle of reading an LJ entry when my e-mail finishes loading, and the e-mail window pops to the forground, interrupting my enjoyment of LJ. Very annoying!

I know that I can avoid this by opening new instances of I.E., but that uses additional 'puter resources, and isn't always a viable option (sometimes I want both windows to maintain the same "back" list, for example.) Is there any way to keep the windows from interrupting each other?

chuckle. However, can't download programs at work. Our IT people get very techy about it.

(smirk mode) download @ home and bring it in on a keychain flash drive?

sorry, i find over-paranoid IT departments to be generally not worth their salary. yes, i know the school has plenty of ITiots that will bring in a virus (or bump into inescapable porn popups and go to jail), but there should always be allowances for the technically savvy to not be forced to use tools that hinder them.

the fact that such IT departments settle on some ancient standard (Netscape 4?????) and make no allowances for how much the market moves on with better tools disgusts me.

how many technically unsupported windows 2000 boxes do you guys still have there?

you all ready for the daylight savings switch? If on Win2K, you won't be.

We're mostly still using Win 3.1. Just kidding. Mostly 2000 or XP, depending on age of the machine. We're aware of the time change problem (you can tell your machine that you're in a different time zone for a few weeks as a cheap fix).

As for the thumb drive idea, can't do that either. Oddly, though, I can write and run C++ or VB programs. For some reason that doesn't violate the no install, no download rules.

Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters:
a long article in CIO magazine on users who know too much and the IT leaders who fear them. Dubbing the universe of consumer technology the "shadow IT department," the article highlights the extent to which the boundary between users' workplace and home have broken down. It notes the increasing clash — familiar to anyone who works in a company with an IT department — between users' home-grown productivity boosters and IT's mandate to protect corporate data. The inherent tendency of the IT department to want to crack down and control technology that it doesn't supply should be resisted at all costs, according to CIO. The article outlines strategies for co-existence. It just might persuade some desperate CIO somewhere not to embark on a career-limiting path of decreeing against gmail and IM.
