Wine-lovers calendar, trivia

From my page-a-day calendar for wine-lovers, entry for 2/3/4

"In France, most oak trees used for wine barrels are felled when they are an average of 180 years old. Unlike in the United States, oak forests in France have been strictly regulated by the government for centuries, and forests are carefully managed to ensure a continued supply of oak wood. Though some of that wood today goes to wine barrels, the oak forests of France were first managed in order to provide a steady supply of ship masts for the French navy."
