Don't let the rediculous "its the artist, stupid" claims by Metallica and Madonna fool you. They don't own their work. Never have. Look at an album and look at its copyright. Unless its an independent, home-made thing like most of our renfaire music, or done by an assertive artist like Marillion, Prince, or King Crimson, its copyright is owned (not managed, owned) by the record label.

The artist pays for the work, which the record label owns. This is slavery to the fullest I've ever seen in the 20th/21st century. (Hence, Prince's "SLAVE" face-mark he kept through the 90s).

Letting musicians whose work is owned by an RIAA label tell you file sharing will hurt them is like letting a black slave on a cotton farm in 1836 tell you that abolishing southern slavery will hurt him.
