Based on the article, they are pierced for an event, then removed after. So it's just the inflamation of piercing, not infection, and they don't sleep in them.
Usually pierced for an event or art piece and removed afterwards. However, how long that event (or performance art) runs can probably vary quite a bit. And that isn't even looking at the ones that are for other reasons (the page that shows the scars is not for the weak stomached out there).
