This is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and then pass out letters to those who want to play along. I am using a D6 to generate letters. To be fair, I have generated a letter for myself.


vast -- immense beyond measure. like the universe. contemplating the enormity of it all doesn't make me feel insignificant, I just end up with a "my head can't hold it all" feeling of lightness.

verisimilitude -- "truth seeming" one of the cardinal properities of Renaissance theatre, with the unities of time, place, and action. If you think Hollywood treats modern audiences like dunces, the Renaissance Academie Francaise really believed that an audience couldn't follow a story that took place over several days, told in the space of two hours. Sticking a story into a historical setting to make it seem more real is an approach to verisimilitude.

voyage -- physical trips, taken to expand or explore our knowledge of our world and ourselves

voyeur -- we all are, to some degree: rubbernecking at accidents, eavesdropping on neighboring tables at restaurants, reality TV. It's about being curious, while trying to ignore that we are each also on display to those around us.

varnish -- protection, gloss

votive -- the little candles. glowing, warmth, scented, light when the power goes out, romance

violet -- the color (to me) more than the flower or the name. simply purple, without the richness of, say, indigo.

Vogon -- unthinking, unstoppable beurocracy. Meant to be a parody of government, but wasn't really.

vintage -- referring to objects that remind us of the past the never was

volvox -- type of microplankton, spheres that form offspring as little internal spheres. The parent bursts open to release the offspring. Whenever I hear "Volvo" I imagine a car with little cars growing inside it.
