Boondock Saints

oh, my!

Before yesterday, I *might* have heard of Boondock Saints. A friend called me, he had an extra ticket, did I want to go? Um, sure? I think? The next few hours were certainly an education.

For those that don't know (I didn't), it's a fairly violent movie about a pair of twins who set out to rid Boston of criminals. It's also hilarious. I laughed, then I hated myself for laughing, then I laughed at myself. I've learned this is a typical reaction.

The movie originally came out in 1999. Well, not really. Never made it to the theater. It was soon after Columbine, and violent movies were blacklisted by the major theater chains. But it got released to video, and slowly built up a very dedicated cult following. It's very disconcerting to hear a whole audience shouting the key lines when you aren't at Rocky Horror.

Today, the uncut director's edition is coming out on DVD. To celebrate/promote the release, a series of theaters showed the movie last night. And I had the luck to be there, like an uninitiated attendee at some unholy rite.

Sounds interesting. Is it Pulp Fiction kind of violence?

Sortof. I guess. I could certainly see them in a double feature together. One major difference is that Boondock Saints has a grainier, low-budget feel to it.

Welcome to the cult, mon ami!

Funny.. I took it for granted that everyone's heard of Bookdock Saints. (Assuming you were at all into movies, of course.)

Weird!

I've never seen it in a theater- I didn't know they did that. I didn't know it rated that kind of excitment, I just figured it was one of those movies everyone had seen... Like The Usual Suspects or Robin Hood: Prince of Theives. Or maybe even Rocky Horror Picture Show I suppose. (Although I guess I think of that one as a 'cult classic' and not so much the others I mentioned ;-D)

Glad you seemed to enjoy yourself!
