Immigrants, American values

Bush has said that immigrants must take on American values.

What are American values? By this, I mean what are the true American values, rather than those that Americans claim to have.

Hmmm... Independence of nature and spirit. Uniqueness of character. Ingenuity and creativity. Willingness to work for our dreams. A sense of being part of a greater community and having a responsibility to that community.

All of this is idealized, of course, but it is what I think of when I hear "American values".

Do those values come with a side of citizenship? Or was he not going for that?
