Really ticked at Mr. Tire
My Saturn is 13 years old, about 230,000 miles, and running pretty well, considering I've spent next-to-nothing on it for the last two years. Just oil changes and gas. Oh, and a few bucks for an air filter.
It has needed new tires, probably some brake work for a couple of months, and a couple of weekends ago it developed a squeak, sounded like it was in the engine rather than a belt, but the timing of the squeak was more belt-like. So I scheduled it for Mr. Tire. Then (of course) the squeak stopped. Still, I took it in. I asked that they test the engine, including compression test, and if the engine was good, I needed a tune-up and oil-change. They called me later that day to say that the engine looked great, but the front rotors needed replacing, and the back breaks needed to be adjusted. This wasn't a big surprise, so I agreed to the work. I also requested new tires, was told that the tires I wanted were not in stock. They'd order them, and they'd be in next week. Fine.
I pick up the car the next day, and discover two new problems: One, the engine stutters sometimes during acceleration (by which I mean it mis-fires, or coughs, or simply skips a beat). Also, when turning sharp left (into a parking space, U-turn), something is grinding. So I called Mr. Tire to mention the problems, and to ask if the tires were in. What tires?
So I asked again about getting tires for the car, and was told that the style/size I wanted was discontinued (though it still shows up on Mr. Tire's web site, and at Goodyear's web site), but they can put on a different size of the same tire. Ummmm...OK... (P185/65R14 instead of P175/70R14) And they'll look at the problems.

blueeowyn was with me and can vouch for what I said). I also said that if they couldn't fix the engine and wheel problems, that I didn't want the tires.
I got a call around noon. They can't find anything wrong with the engine, no stalling. (Stalling?) Perhaps I want a new distributor cap and rotor? Also, the noise in the wheels was probably the old shocks/mounts when I went over speed bumps. They were currently putting on the tires. OK, they obviously have a few clues missing. I explained the specific problems again, and indicated that if they couldn't fix them, I didn't want the tires. I also ask for a price on the cap/rotor. I'm surprised they don't suggest spark plug wires as well (they really should have suggested cap/rotor/wires when they did the tune up) They'll test drive again and get back to me.
