Vegemite! Mmmmmm?
Oct. 27th, 2006 10:41 amThere was a report recently that vegemite (a yeasty bitter Australian spreadable food) was being banned from the US, and that customs officials were confiscating it. According to this Snopes article it's not true. So go ahead, eat some vegemite!
It was noted in the article that vegemite is high in folate, also called vitamin B9. The daily recommended amount of B9 is 0.4 mg per day, and a serving of vegemite has 0.1 mg. But too much (more than 1.0 mg) is supposedly not so good for you, so the FDA limits which foods can have folate added to them (the added form of it is called folic acid). However, vegemite's folate occurs naturally, rather than being added, so it is not banned.
