I'm not the healthiest of individuals, but I am working on getting better. I count calories, I take the stairs, and my parking lot is a quarter-mile from my office. I eat my veggies and drink lots of water. I also drink too much coffee, and can be tempted by hot blueberry cobbler. A la mode. But I digress.

Until recently I haven't gotten adequate exercise. So in mid-June I started walking two to four times per week. Initially my path was about a three-fourths of a mile, which I gradually built up to 2.8 miles. (I've got a little map showing miles between streets in my neighborhood).

Then I decided to shift to jogging (that was late July). I even bought appropriate shoes. This meant dropping the path back to 1.8 miles, but I was jogging about 20% of it. You'd think the legs, or lungs, or heart would be the first to complain, but it was actually the "love-handles" -- I guess being jounced against the ribs caused some irritation.

As of yesterday, I was up to 80% of the trip as jogging, and I hope to get that to all jogging by week's end, then work up the mileage from there.

Very cool, somewhat thought-inducing video about the state of the world.

Two nights in a row, I had dreams about being bitten by a snake. "this is strange!" thought I, and so mentioned it to my spouse. "What would Freud say?" I asked, jokingly.

Her response: "that your cigar is really a duck!"

Do you feel a little happier with a few bucks in your wallet or pocket? More energized? More ready to face the world? Now we know why!

An average of 90% of paper money is contaminated with cocaine. Even more near major cities!

I mentioned recently that I was applying to college as a returning student. I was accepted, and today I enrolled in two classes and Amazonned my text books. Wheeee!

I just had a nice little granny smith apple. Tart and Tasty! Oddly, one of the seeds had somehow migrated into the flesh of the apple, and had germinated a little. A one centimeter sprout winding its way out of the seed.

As I mentioned yesterday, I tried my hand at home-roasting coffee. So this morning I ground some beans and prepared a pot. It was extremely drinkable. It has a slightly oily texture, and a nice nutty flavor, but the flavor was a little weaker than I like. A little bitterness, but more as an afterthought, not the overwhelming primary sensation. I have enough dried beans to do two or three more roastings, and I think I'll go for a little darker.

So I call this a successful adventure, a definite learning experience. And the resulting coffee is, if not as good as Peet's, very nice.

(Peet's is an online mail-order coffee store, which roasts coffee the day after you order it, then ships the day after that)

I found unroasted coffee beans for sale at my local Giant, and tonight I did my first home-roasting!

Home roasting was standard until about a hundred years ago. The fact that people don't do it now is a tribute to our desire for convenience over quality! Fresh roasted coffee is by far the best, it begins to lose its flavor about a week after roasting, and the stuff you buy in the store was roasted possibly up to a year ago. (when I've purchased freshly roasted coffee, it really is fabulous for several days, then slowly degrades to something resembling Folgers).

It produces a lot of smoke! This apparently is normal, but stinky. House is currently venting. Cats are still glaring at me a little. Hopefully it will be sufficiently aired out before [livejournal.com profile] blueeowyn gets home.

I don't get to really taste my coffee until morning. After roasting, it takes several hours to reach peak flavor -- something about CO2 and oils and some such. I'll let y'all know how it turns out!

Fabulously delightful movie. cut for mild spoiler stuff )

The foods in the movie were a marvel to behold, and I now want to eat a block of real honest-to-goodness butter. I love movies like this, or Ratatouille, or Chocolat, or No Reservations, that remind us that even in an age of diets, there is still sometimes room for culinary wonderment.

Afterwards, we hit Borders and bought a copy of Julia Child's cookbook (there are different printings of it out there -- we found a two-volume boxed set for $20, but the version that just came out as one volume is $40). I had to laugh after getting the receipt -- there was a coupon attached so that we could save 20% on Julia Child's cookbook during our next visit!

Just a note that I'm planning to return to college to take a couple of classes, "non-degree seeking." I sent the re-enrollment application last week, and it should be automatic readmittance, but it still takes two weeks to get an answer.

Wheee!

Also, Omegle looks like it would interest some people.

LivePlasma also has a bit of promise.

Enjoy!

There is now a web site that will identify optimum times during movies to take a pee break! When you go to RunPee.com you should be able to select a movie, and receive a cue-line for when you can dash from the theatre for a minute or two.

(unfortunately, the site seems to be down as I write this, so I can't verify its usefulness!)

Oh, my. There's a scandal in Hollywood. Look how shocked I am.

Apparently Morgan Freeman might be romantically involved with his step granddaughter. She's 27 years old. Didn't Woody Allen do something like this a couple of decades ago? A bit strange, but they're both adults.

If you go to the picture in this article you see Freeman in front of a poster for Mandela Day. It shows an adult hand holding a child's hand. (The blurred words are, "Mandela Day, Make an Imprint.") Are we supposed to feel like Freeman is dating a child? Are we supposed to think the poster is about men dating little girls? How does the organization sponsoring Mandela Day feel about their poster being associated with this article?

Very bad choice of picture.

If you haven't heard yet, the 50-states quarter program has been extended to include DC and several US territories. DC came out a little bit ago (two bits ago?), and the Puerto Rico quarter just came out.
