A friend at work has a relatively new Hewlett Packard (about one year old), AMD 64 dual core system. Worked great until a week ago. Downloaded recommended update for MS SP3, computer crashed (continuously rebooted). This problem is well-documented on the web (click for info). After recovering core system with soft system recovery (not a full system recovery), as recommended in HP's trouble shooting guide, files were absent. He'd like to recover his data files and pictures -- the files should still be present on the hard drive.

Any recommendations for safe, inexpensive recovery?

EDIT: I may have found the solution for him. It seems that if you have an XP system with multiple user accounts set up, then a system recovery doesn't remove the old files, it just squirrels them away in an unreachable directory. When you are done with the recover process, you have to log in as the administrator and change the permissions on that directory, or the files inside it. I sent him the info, we'll see if it worked!

Maybe I'm not too old to change jobs. Maybe I could become a computer scientist. That's a job where you spend most of your time testing video games, right? I guess I'd have to learn C; as advanced as computers are, you'd think they'd learn English! Hmmm...question: do I need to learn A and B first? Or can I jump straight to C? Fortunately, I alread know a bit about java. You've got your Ethiopian beans, your Central American beans, and of course, some of the best come from Hawaii! I studied a little calligraphy in my youth, so scripting should be easy. Did I leave out anything?

I dropped [livejournal.com profile] blueeowyn off at UMd (where she works) this morning, and afterwards stopped at Starbucks to get coffee. It's graduation day at the university, and many young men and women in the coffee shop were ready for the day -- men in gym shorts and t-shirts, women in semi-formal spring dresses.

It should be a very nice day for the graduates -- very sunny and warm. Ah darnit, now I'm gettin' teh nastalgia.

You'd think that professional bagel-making places would understand that when you put the blueberry bagels on the same cutting board where the onion/garlic bagels were, then you get onion-flavored blueberry bagels! And really, nobody wants those.

Today, the cafeteria where I work has fat-free yogurt with fruit and granola. Very nice. Usually. But the granola tastes faintly of onions!

Gah!

You probably know about the new Star Wars animated feature, yes? But have you seen the preview?

After seeing Iron Man, and seeing this article about upcoming Marvel films, I'm thinking it's time to invest in their stock!

Iron Man rocked! From beginning to end, simply rocked.

And when you see it, stay through the credits.

Unfortunately, it will take much more than Sudafed to clear up this congestion.

According to this article (reporting data from Forbes), D.C. has the worst traffic congestion in the country, beating out Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston (the others in the top 5).

In the news today...

Polar bears will likely officially receive the designation "endangered" in a couple of weeks. According to this article, the implications of such an entry have importance beyond the bears themselves.

The decision to protect, or not protect, the polar bear has huge policy implications for both countries. Not only does acknowledging the plight of the polar bear formally mean acknowledging the fact of global warming, but it would presumably require governments to do something about curtailing the pollution causing global warming.

The article also suggests that the Bush administration has done its best to delay this action:

Andrew Wetzler of the Natural Resources Defense Council blamed the Bush administration of violating the Endangered Species Act by its delaying politics. A delay, he said, likely has been motivated by an administration desire to see offshore lease sales continue as far as possible without additional polar bear protections.

Pointy-haired boss walks into Asok's cubicle.

PHB: Asok, I decided to give you a slight promotion!
Asok: Gasp! A slight promotion!
PHB: The pay will be the same but you can make your cubicle slightly larger by shaving the ragged fabric on the inside walls.
PHB: Your new title is spelled just like the old one but it's pronounced totally differetnly.
Asok: (whistles happily and scritches at cublicle walls)

This is particularly amusing to me, since I was told more than two years ago that I was getting a grade increase, just needed a couple of signatures from the office director! It hasn't happened yet, but my boss mentions it at every semi-annual performance meeting.

I didn't discover Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series until a couple of years ago. And it has been a truly wonderful journey so far. I've just started volume 11, and I'm not sure how I'll react when I'm done -- the wait for the last volume (to be authored by a guest writer due to Mr. Jordan's passing) will be ...

Anyway, I just found a YouTube of (mostly) original artwork -- some good, some not so good -- related to the series.

YouTube Wheel of Time

At least I can read the prelude while I wait.
